Letter of James (Jas)

This letter is an exhortation, concerned almost exclusively with ethical conduct. James emphasizes sound teaching and responsible moral behavior. Ethical norms are derived not primarily from Christology, as in Paul’s teachings, but from a concept of salvation that involves conversion, Baptism, forgiveness of sin, and expectation of judgment.

First Letter of Peter (1 Pt)

In this letter, Peter encourages Christians to remain faithful to their standards of belief and conduct in spite of threats of persecution. The suffering and death of Christ serve as both a source of salvation and an example. The letter mingles moral exhortation with catechetical summaries of mercies in Christ. Peter’s encouragement to fidelity in spite of suffering is based upon a vision of the meaning of Christian existence, with an emphasis on Baptism.
